Christmas holidays

Christmas is arriving fast and our Online-Shop and Replacement Part Service colleagues are working hard to get all the presents to you. In order to let them enjoy the Christmas holidays as much as possible, our shop closes on

On October 24th the holy grounds of board game enthusiasts are once more to be found in Essen, Germany: the Internationale Spieletage SPIEL is the worlds most important board game fair and Lookout Games is part of it! This is our annual information that provides details about our booth and our products at the fair. We welcome Tony Boydell as a guest on Saturday (Oct. 26th) from 10:00 to 12:00 at our booth. He will not only happily decorate your Foothills-Cover with his signature, but also take over control of one of our Foothills demo tables!  

Where can you find us?

Our booth is located in hall 1, F-135. ATTENTION: Floor plans shown are from last year, as we haven’t received the new ones for SPIEL'19 yet. Since nothing has changed in respect of our location, these floor plans should do fine for a first orientation.

Everyone who visited our booth last year should probably know them already: the boardgame tables from HÜNE Spieltische. And because they were so well received by our customers (and we like them very much), this years booth comes with an upgrade: All(!) tables will be provided by HÜNE Spieltische, giving you the opportunity to test our new releases on this high quality furniture. Additionally the folks from HÜNE Spieltische moved in with us, so you can get first-hand advice directly from them. Furthermore, they have a lot of accessories with them, which you can give a try while playing our games.

Expedition to Newdale

The “Oh my Goods!” saga continues—this time, as a board game. Immerse yourselves over the course of several scenarios in an overarching story full of adventure. Each game represents one chapter. You can play the chapters in sequence—as a campaign—or on their own. Various maps with different events, game elements, objectives, and actions challenge you to adapt your strategy to the given conditions and use them to your advantage.

Your hands are dirty, the back is aching and the clothes are sweaty, but your work for today is finished! The new mill looms proudly in front of you and the soft groaning and fluttering of the blades sounds like a choir of angels in your ears. Soon the golden wheat of your fields will be ground to valuable flour which will earn you a fortune. Or maybe... building a bakery sounds even better! You could bake bread and buns from the flour and increase the value of your goods even more. And while you are thinking about it, you remember that there was a village, only about a mile away, which was literally begging for a bakery. The plan starts to form in your head and tomorrow seems to become another busy and exhausting day.

Expedition to Newdale is the new Oh my Goods! game from renowned designer Alexander Pfister. In this board game adaption of the successful card game, 1 to 4 players from 12 and up compete in different chapters to experience the world of the Longsdale kingdom once again. The story of Expedition to Newdale starts about 5 years after the events from Oh my Goods! Escape to Canyon Brook, but you don't need to know the prequels at all. Each chapter of the game lasts about 90 minutes which adds up to around 12 hours of exciting campaign gameplay. And when you found your favorite chapter while playing the campaign, you can always come back and play it again to have even more fun!

At the beginning of the game you have your personal board, a coal mine as your start building and 5 hand cards. Depending on which chapter you are playing, the appropriate game board sits in the middle of the table. Each round is divided into 5 phases which are played in order (or partially parallel, once you become more familiar with the game). In phase 1, a new event is revealed which usually alters the course of play in this round slightly (e. g., by introducing new buildings). Additionally the event card shows a fixed amount of workers which are available this round. An information which is much appreciated, as you have to place your action markers in phase 2. The latter are numbered 1 - 4 which is important for phase 4 and means that you need to plan ahead. But first phase 3: in this phase, more workers are drawn from a bag and get added to the others. This means that productions which would have been impossible before (because workers were missing) are now easily done. Pushing your luck might be beneficial! Phase 4 is the opposite to phase 2. Instead of placing your workers, you resolve their chosen action in order of their numbers. We hope you had a backup plan in place if your desired workers were not drawn in phase 3, because this can trigger an unpleasant chain of events! Not enough workers could mean that a production does not happen, which then means that you might not have enough money to build the building with your second action marker. Oh, and your third marker was planned to directly produce in the newly built building? Well, where there is no building, there's no place to produce in, right? Clearly: planning ahead, a little luck and good alternatives are the way to success. In Phase 5, all players can either use a free building action or draw new hand cards. The last phase is used to resolve all buildings which do not need workers, e. g., an automatic coal production or a building which offers the conversion of a certain good to victory points. Afterwards the next round starts, of which you play a total of seven. A final scoring at the end of round seven will then show if you win or lose.

Expedition to Newdale promises a lot of exciting game sessions. Thanks to its "legacy like" development throughout the chapters (e. g., different buildings, significantly changed game boards, etc.) nearly no game session feels alike. Even better: because the components are not destroyed or changed permanently, you can always replay your favorite chapter the way it's meant to be played. Thanks to an easy table in the rule book you will always know which cards, game boards, etc. are needed.

Mandala

The Mandala: the symbol of an ancient and sacred ritual. Colored sand is laid to create a symbolic map of the world, before the pattern is ceremonially destroyed and the sand cast into the river—an ever repeating cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

With a slow and steady movement from your wrist, you cautiously pour the last remaining sand onto the edge of the Mandala. After standing up you look at your masterpiece, being satisfied with its looks. Black sand was a good choice as the color stands for death and renewal and that is exactly what is going to happen next. The ceremonial destruction of the Mandala represents the renunciation from the physical world as well as the rebirth. Like the next Mandala which is already starting to form in your head, ready to flow through your hands into a new and beautiful artwork. Mandala from Trevor Benjamin & Brett J. Gilbert is not quite as spiritual. This tactical 2 player game lets players from 10 and up compete in the creation of Mandalas. In about 30 minutes several Mandalas are created and destroyed and the players try to earn as many victory points in this process as possible by collecting the different colors their - abstract - Mandalas are made of. Who will earn the most points? Who will be the master of Mandalas? You start the game with a hand of six cards and the central playing mat, displaying two Mandalas and a River and Cup for each player. The Mandalas are separated into three areas, the Mountain area in the middle and the two player areas on their respective sides. On your turn you can choose from three actions: Either you play exactly one card into the Mountain area of one of the Mandalas and draw up to three new cards, or you play any amount of cards of exactly one color in your personal player area. Using one of these two actions, you have to follow the Rule of Color! This rule states, that in a Mandala each color may only be found in exactly one area. In other words: if red is already located in the Mountain area, you can not play red cards into your player area (but you could play a red card into the Mountain area). As a third action you can choose to not play any card into a Mandala at all, but instead put any number of cards of the same color onto the discard pile and draw exactly the same amount of cards you discarded. After you finished your turn, you check if a Mandala has been finished. This means: all six colors of the game are represented in that Mandala. If that's the case, the ceremony of destruction happens. Beginning with the player who has more cards in their player area, that player choose one color from the Mountain area, takes all cards of that color and adds them to their River and Cup. The position of the color in your River determines how much victory points the cards of the same color in your Cup are worth for you at the end of the game. The game ends either when the draw pile is used up or one player has all six colors of the game added to their River. You already want to find your inner peace with Mandala? Good for you! Bärenpark: The Bad News Bears

Your bear park is expanding … because the grizzlies are coming! That’s right, some of the biggest bears on earth will be making their new home in your park. Their habitats are going to be huge though, so do your best to fit them in any way you can! And with a bigger park, you’ll also need to give your guests a way to get around: that’s where your brand new monorail system comes in.

Filled with pride, you're looking down on the newly built habitat. Tomorrow will be the day the first Grizzly sets foot in your park. And you did good! The habitat is huge and filled with forests and bushes the bears can use to hide, appropriate to their likings. Luckily your engineers had the idea to build the monorail you are currently sitting in. Otherwise it would have been difficult for your customers to experience the bears in their natural behavior. These are challenges you already overcame, but you are also sure: New challenges are to come! The new expansion The Bad News Bears by Phil Walker-Harding offers new challenges for the game Bärenpark. The newly added Grizzly bears need more space than the ones from the base game and make it more difficult to puzzle your park in a good way. Because you will need more space in order to do so, the city administration approved of a new park area you can build on. In this expansion, you are thus building your park on up to five park areas. Additionally, you are now able to build a monorail in your park which enables your customers to experience the natural behavior of the bears without disturbing them. Lastly, new achievements create new challenges for expert players of the base game. The course of the game is still the same. Every round you are able to place one tile in your park, getting new tiles by building over the appropriate icons. If you want to get one of the new Grizzly tiles, you need to exchange exactly one green park tile and one animal house tile. The monorail on the other hand is built "on the fly". Whenever you build one of the green park tiles, you can also add a monorail tower in it. Following building rules of the monorail, you will add a track in your park which is worth points at the end of the game. The new achievements are simply adding more variety, especially for park building experts. All three modules can be used separately or in any combination (including all three together)!
